Super magnet wand
« on: December 06, 2008, 11:22:03 PM »
A super magnet wand is very easy to make. And it will pull out more black sand than your normal black sand magnet. Here is a picture of one.

You do not need much material to make the wand.
short piece of 1 inch pvc
short piece of 1/2 inch pvc 2 inches longer than 1 inch
2 1 inch pvc pipe caps, try to get the ones that are flat instead of domed.
1 1/2 inch pvc coupling
1 1/2 inch pvc plug
1 1 inch diameter super magnet with hole in middle
1 screw that will fit through hole in super magnet
1 nut to fit screw

The first thing you want to do is cut a hole in one of the 1 inch pvc pipe caps with a hoile saw, big enough for the 1/2 inch pvc to fit through.

Then drill a hole through the end of the 1/2 inch pipe plug , big enough for  your screw to go through. Use the nut and screw to secure the super magnet to the pipe plug.

Then glue the 1/2 inch plug into the 1/2 inch coupling, and the glue the coupling onto the 1/2 inch pipe.

Glue the 1 inch pvc pipe cap without the hole onto one end of the 1 inch pipe. Then slip the i inch pvc pipe cap with the hole over the 1/2 inch pipe, insert the magnet into the 1 inch pipe and glue the 1 inch pipe cap with the hole to the top of the 1 inch pipe.

Your done.

Using the wand. In the picture, the 1/2 inch pipe is pulled back. To use, you just let the fall down to the bottom of the 1 inch pipe.

Here is how I use mine. I put my concentrates in a pan or bucket, with some water. Then I stir the water above the black sand, letting the black sand jump up to the magnet. I do not put the wand directly into the black sand. To release the black sand, you just pull the 1/2 inch pipe out some.

Here is something else that works extremely well. Take a 1/2 inch plastic pipe, insert a 2 inch cylindrical magnet in it. Glue an end cap on each end. The pipe should be about 12 inches long. To use , just drag your magnetic pipe along the bottom of your sluice box or dry washer. A ball of iron filings will collect on the bottom of your wand. To release the iron filings simply, tap your wand on the inside of your bucket and all of the particles will fall off. Great little tool. Be sure to pan out all of your black sand as it will capture micron gold. Good luck Diggerdan
