Shipwreck, looking for info?
« on: April 05, 2011, 08:16:03 PM »
I was told that an 1813 British pay ship was sunk just west of Wolf Island in Lake Ontario. Apparently the loot is still on the ship which was to pay the Brit soldiers at Fort Henry or some other fort during teh war of 1812.

Is this true and has the ship been found.?

   Thanks

Did a fair bit of research on the east end of the Lake and River, plus a bit of diving around Fort Henry and westward a ways, and knew a few of the more prominent divers during those days, but never came across anything that indicated what you're saying.  What is your source of information?  I gather you're in the general Kingston area, check the phone book for Lloyd Shales, if he's still living, he'd know something about it if anyone did.  I know that a bunch of gold coinage got tossed overboard by a US vessel during the Lighthouse Battle in the Prescot area..... so the Brits couldn't get such.  As I recall the research, there wasn't too much happening on the west end of Wolfe Island.... just some cannon fire as a US vessel worked its way down the shoreline past Bath and ranging onward to about where the Dupont Plant now resides.... thence they struck further offshore and out of range as they floated past Murney Tower and the Fort.  Hope your lead is solid and you turn up with something good.  Be sure to keep us apprised of any of your treasure hunting endeavors.

Somebody said that it couldn't be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That maybe it couldn't but he wouldn't be one
Who'd say so until he had tried.
