There is one real durable motor out there.  I have used them for other projects.  They are wheel chair motors.  Get them from a medical salvage or a VA hospital etc.  In fact my favorite ones are the direct drive to a smaller wheel.  You will be able to use the mounting holes to incorporate it on your trommel. The trommel cage will set on the chair wheel.  Some of them are 24 volt but that is no problem, just hook 2 of the 12v  in series.  The bottom line though is to get your power to the trommel with gear reduction and make sure it is something that is rated for continuous duty with bearings and not just bushings.

If connecting wiper motors to things. Make sure to put rubber some where in the drive. Shock of lodging material will strip the gear box. But if a stable graduating pressure is applied it will double the pulling strength of a wiper motor. And keep its brushes from getting burned.
