Ammolite Hunt
« on: January 16, 2010, 08:25:04 PM »
Went Ammolite hunting today.I love ammolite and I dont think I would ever sell any of my collection, its getting harder to find these days.
I would love to be able to pit mine for ammolite but...the laws are touchy.Only surface finds, you get lucky with nice stuff sometimes.I do enjoy the exersice of hiking up and down the coluess in search of the ancient creatures. It does get rather dangerous at times getting to the very high steep cliffs to examine the iron stone to see if its shell or just stone.
The first picture does no do the piece justice, its very nice with greens, reds, pinks, gold, oranges, yellow but no blue.It would need to be cut and polished but this would make a few inchs of good material if not more.

Now I think I found a older river channel way above the river(Way up a 90 degree crazy slope, pretty scary if you dont like heights).I am always thinking "gold" now I will have to bring a pan next time and see whats in that gravel. So hard to tell if its glacial till,It does not look that way, looks real staked well and has smaller gravel packed in the spaces?

Rockpup, take the pics when the rocks are wet (water), not laying in water but just wet from water.
It shows the colours better, used on Opal. <-yes_>

Yeah your right! They are fairly hard to get the colout to show well.

Whammy you should be able to find some in lethbridge-look in the river bottom parks,I find pieces in the gravel bars sometimes.

Rockpup:
Is there any chance you'd be willing to tell me where you went? My wife and I live in Calgary and would love to go ammolite hunting one weekend. I've heard that along the St. Mary's river is good but there are mines on one side that protect their claims vigorously and reserves on the other that do the same. Any help you could provide would be appreciated.
