Outside Bend Placer Streaks
« on: January 26, 2008, 12:22:08 PM »
How many venture to check the gravels of an outside bend?  And anyone realizing favorable results, please share your experience/s.
Somebody said that it couldn't be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That maybe it couldn't but he wouldn't be one
Who'd say so until he had tried.

Sure do, but then it's always your call depending on the situation.  What I'm trying to say is use your head and look around, could the stream/river have changed in the past...hundred/thousand or more years? How about the outside bend laying under a nice bench...wouldn't you check it?  Better...  Maybe a slide area above too?  How about downstream from this "outside bend" do you have color in the pan/box that is rough?  Again, better go back up to that outside bend and do a little more checking.
I've found good gold in outside bends for various reasons, and a couple of them not explained by reasoning either...

Dave is right about the outside of bends of an alluvial stream below a bench. If the stream is under cutting a coarse gold bearing gravel bench, the coarse gold will fall out of the bank and into the outside of the meander. Since it is coarse gold, it wont get washed up on the inside of the bend that is where find gold washes up. It is too heavy so it stays on and in the bottom where it may eventually work its way down to the paystreak. :)
