Hi.Dan, get yourself a little bit of swimming pool cleaner.(muriatic) content.Afew drops in a glass vial will do.If it is platinum it will turn the liquid purple.Just saying,Luck Mcbain.
Interesting test.  Has it worked for you?  I have a jewelry test kit and find that I need to put that acid onto a streak plate that has been rubbed by the suspected platinum and sometimes the colour change is only obvious if I blot the solution afterwards with a white tissue and look at the tissue.  I think the other possible test is low(ish) heat.  If the rock is lead, then it will melt.  If it is mercury covered gold, then the mercury will burn off (dangerous - do not breath or perform this test inside).  If it is platinum, it won't be affected.  I am interested in these tests, as I also found some heavy grey nuggets and will be playing with them.

For fun, I will give it a try on something stamped platinum and then the tiny placer pieces to see if we get purple.  I didn't realize it would take two days for the test.  Good info.
No wonder on jewelry that I need to do the streak acid test.  That takes a few minutes, but the acid needs to be fresh.  I will tell you a kicker.  I had a 5 lb rock that tested on XRF as 50% PGM.   It got mixed up with my silver ore rocks and I can no longer find it.  Also, I have no idea where I picked it up.  I would have got it metal detecting an old mine, but for the life of me don't recall which one and at the time thought I had silver.

Xplore:  the one piece looks to me like mercury on gold. I could be wrong but try the above mentioned methods. Interested in knowing the results. I love the gold character. Gold like that is priceless and always a safe bet it didnít travel far. Thanks for posting.  <-good_>
