PRESS RELEASE

Tahltan Nation to Suspend Jade Extraction and Placer Mining in Tahltan Territory

DEASE LAKE, BC – June 25, 2018 The Tahltan Nation has provided notice to the Province of British Columbia that all jade extraction and placer mining operations within Tahltan Territory must be suspended. President Chad Norman Day of the Tahltan Central Government recently wrote a strongly worded letter to the provincial government  following conversations with senior staff at the Ministry of Energy, Mines & Petroleum Resources.

“Jade is an important resource to Tahltan culture and must only be utilized with our consent and in a  manner that respects our culture” said Day.  “Despite this, jade extraction and placer mining has continued in our territory for generations with minimal regulatory oversight and no compensation to our people.  Present day proponents - and by extension the provincial government - have failed to demonstrate respect for Tahltan culture and the environment and therefore do not have, nor have they ever had, the social licence to continue operating in our territory.”

This action comes following many years of unchecked jade extraction and placer mining and there are at least 25 companies exploring for or currently extracting jade in Tahltan Territory, primarily in areas near Dease Lake. No jade or placer operators have the consent or support of the Tahltan Nation and there is no framework in place for Tahltans to co-manage in the regulatory oversight or sharing of benefits from these operations.

“In light of our concerns, we are asking the provincial government to support our position and work with us to ensure that jade and precious minerals are only extracted from our territory with our consent and in a manner that respects our culture” said Day. “I welcome the opportunity to sit down with the provincial government, jade operators and placer miners to discuss how our concerns can be addressed in a  responsible and fair manner.

Until then, the Tahltan Nation will no longer tolerate the status quo and stands ready to assert Tahltan jurisdiction over our territory through any legal means necessary, including protest and court action.”For more information please contact:Calvin CarlickExecutive DirectorTahltan Central [email protected]: 250-771-3274

No easy answers here.   If it is truly their territory, then they should be able to control it.  It is a huge swath of land now closed to prospecting until some kind of resolution.

   hi Garth64...

Jul. 5, 2019 4:45 p.m.Local NewsNews

A week after Chad Day put out a statement demanding a moratorium on jade and placer mining, the Tahltan Central Government (TCG) president is out on the land serving eviction notices to operators.

A Facebook post this afternoon (July 5) said Day, along with Scott Hawkins, a Tahltan Band councillor, and Kim Marion, a TCG family representative, visited 10 different jade and placer sites yesterday.

“President Day read out loud to each company that their operations within our territory do not have the consent of our people and that they are infringing on our Aboriginal rights and title,” the post stated. “He informed these companies that their ongoing activities are extremely disrespectful and illegal under Tahltan Law and demanded that they cease all activities in Tahltan territory.”
