Hello from the Fraser Valley! Help wanted.
« on: March 27, 2019, 10:04:30 PM »
Hello! My name is Alex and I am relatively new to panning. I have caught the gold fever and have made gold panning my new hobby! I've bought all the equipment for hand panning and have even been out to the Hope panning reserve. However, I have been pretty unsuccessful in my attempts. If anyone would be willing to take a newbie out and show him the ropes that would be much appreciated!!!

Hi Alex,

Great to hear you have been bitten by the bug : )

I would recommend going to the Yale panning reserve over Hope, there's better gold and it's a better setup overall. It's only 15-20 minutes beyond Hope. Dig where the cobbles and gravels are really packed together, and the digging / pick axing is hard. If you see garnets where you are digging you'll likely get some gold in most pans.

Some folks say much of the gold is in the first 6 inches at Yale. You'll have to find out for yourself . Don't dig where the sand is super light and fluffy - there are no heavies there and likely little gold.

My biggest tip would be to watch crazy amounts of YouTube videos and get out there and try everything you see. Here are a few that I have found useful:

Gold Panning LIke a Pro - By Garrett, makers of the Super Sluice Gold pan - pretty much the standard nowadays

Try contacting McBain, a forum member with a claim on the Coquihalla. He is out there most weekends and if you show respect he is very generous with sharing his knowledge and letting you pan on his claim. An ice cold 6 pack never hurts either to fill up the cooler ; )

Have fun out there!

Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.

-Xplore / Dan

P.S. You can also try doing a google search for "Where to Gold Pan Lower Mainland". Seek, and ye shall find - it's all out there waiting for you : )

Hi Alex,

It turns out that a friend and I are heading to the Yale reserve for some panning this Sunday. We'll be leaving North Van at 6am and arriving at Yale around 8:30-9:00am.

He only has 2 seats in his cargo van, so we won't be able to drive you.

You are more than welcome to meet us at the Yale Panning Reserve though, and we'll be glad to show you the ropes.

PM me and I can give you my contact info.

Dan / Xplore

P.S. Anyone else who is just starting out, has gear (gold pan, classifier, shovel, etc) and wants some guidance feel free to PM me or meet up with us at Yale this Sunday.

So jealous, Dan... :D

Just remember who dug up the ground a bit for you last Tuesday ;)

Good luck, and good gold!

- Steven

PS: hope the water levels are as  low for you as they were for me... it was super awesome seeing all the spots I couldn't get to last time...
