Gold panning
« on: October 09, 2018, 09:16:18 PM »
Hello all, well, Im just about to retire and I would like to take up gold panning. Sometime in the recent past I heard that there were clubs in B.C. (I think it was B.C.). I believe where you could try out a claim or pay to use a claim owned by the club and if you liked the claim there was the possibility of buying it. Now Im not sure if I have this down 100% correct, but it was something along the above. Does such an animal exist? Thanks, John

Yes indeed the animal does in fact exist however I would be surprised if these claims would in fact be much good. I would suggest that you try one of the panning reserves set aside by the govt where you can ply your pan for free and almost be guaranteed to see some color.Secondly there will be others like yourself there who can offer advice and training on panning.it is somewhat like curling....you can learn the basics in 5 minutes but it takes a lot of time and practice to be any good at it and everyone has a  slightly different technique

Hi.I said they got some proving up to do.Anybody dealing with these guys in the past has been totally (censored).Felt raped to put it mildly. How does that help this forum.there are some genuine folks out there but not this outfit. If we want new members they got to be treated right and share a good experience. Not bad as it has been so far. luck Mcbain.

Hi Chile1! Welcome to the GPEX community.

My recommendation would be to check out the free panning areas the government has set aside for the public's use.

Just search on Google for something like: "gold panning reserves in bc".

There is another club called the West Coast Placer Mining Club. I have never been a member and have no affiliations with them, but it's something like $50/year and you get access to a bunch of different claims in BC plus the ability to learn from the more experienced folks if you want to go that route. Note - I am not necessarily recommending them, but it might be an option for some folks who do their homework and like the idea of getting access to claims beyond the government ones for a very small sum of money.

The worst thing to do would be to go and buy expensive claims without knowing what you are doing in terms of panning or the MTO claim system in BC. Please don't do that as there are a few shady characters looking to make a quick buck. The more reputable ones will have personally panned their claims, and will have pictures to show (and might even be willing to give you a guided tour so you can see for yourself). Be wary of people who 'salt' their claims with gold and tell you where to dig!

OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS

1. When reaching out to some of the more experienced folks on this site I have generally had a very warm reception, so try connecting with them by sending a private message here on GPEX, and ask if you can go pan on their claim for a day, and perhaps meet up with them (or even offer to dig for their high banker) You will get a yes more often than not, and its a fantastic and free opportunity to learn from someone who has the knowledge you are seeking. You will need precise directions to the claim, and ideally you will have a GPS and know how to use it. Do not start panning somewhere unless you are 100% sure you have permission to pan there.

2. As for learning gold prospecting and panning, YouTube is your best friend. It's one of the the best times in history to learn this stuff as you literally have on-demand access to dozens, if not hundreds of teachers and mentors from around the world on video. Try focusing on learning to pan for fine flour gold and doing so slowly and carefully, because if you can master that then coarse gold is easy.

Here are some of my favorite resources on YouTube:

Watch as many videos as you can on gold panning, and you will eventually notice they all refer to the same things over and over.

3. Read as many books on gold panning as you can, and then get out there and learn for yourself! Here are the books that I have found helpful:

Gold Panning is Easy - Roy Lagal
Gold Panning in British Columbia - Jim Lewis & Susan Campany
Gold, Gemstone & Mineral Sites of British Columbia - With a Day's Drive of Vancouver - Rick Hudson

4. I would recommend the following gear options: (again, I have no affiliation with this vendor and the links are direct to them with no benefit to me)

Garret Deluxe Gold Panning Kit (I have this one, and it's great) - $55 CAD - https://www.smi-elec.com/product/00/1651410/GARRETT-DELUXE-GOLD-PAN-KIT-GARRETT-PN-1651410-

11 piece gold panning kit - SMI Electronics $78 CAD - https://www.smi-elec.com/product/00/gp5-kit111/11-pcs-GOLD-PANNING-KIT-PN-GP5-KIT111-

Note - I have no affiliations with any of the people or companies listed above, these are just some things I have found most useful during my first full season of gold prospecting.

Feel free to send my a private message if you have more questions, I'm glad to help.

Have fun out there!

Hello.  Personally I would avoid these clubs,  though this opinion is only based on my attempts to join or contact them when I first started out.  Most of them have affiliations with selling / flipping claims.

Your welcome to visit one of my claims and do some panning,  feel free to contact me via PM.
