Crazy Crusher - How long to they last?
« on: May 04, 2017, 10:02:46 AM »
I'm looking to do some sampling of a prospect which consists mostly of a quartz arenite and conglomerate. I have a homemade crusher to do small samples, but for what I have planned in the upcoming months, it's going to take too long to crush the samples using the sampler.

I did a couple of kilograms with my homemade crusher last week and it took more than an hour to get it <100 mesh.

I don't really want to DIY, so I've been looking at the Crazy Crusher. I figure I'll have about 1500 kg of samples to crush, and I was wondering if the Crazy Crusher would last that long without having to replace any wearable components.

Does anyone here have any practical experience with the Crazy Crusher.

Neat and innovative device.  No experience but if you read the FAQ's on their site you will see that they recommend that you crush only one or two ice cube sized rocks at a time.  It also, and only incidentally,  reduces a portion of the feed to minus 20 mesh and most of that comes after two or more passes....Not your goal of 100 mesh and smaller!   You might be better served to get a chain mill which will pretty much powder most of the material in one pass.  Some will handle up to fist size feed or larger and will probably make pretty short work of 1,500 KG's.  As far as wear, when the chains wear out you can probably replace them with chain from a local hardware store.

Good luck.

I can't believe I didn't check out the FAQ.

For what I need, it looks like it will fit the bill and last as long as I need it.

While not as nearly as fast as one of the chain mills, from the videos, it certainly looks like it works a lot faster than my rod in a pipe set-up.

Even if I have to run it through again and again until it's all powder, that's still better than what I'm doing now.

Then again, one of those chain mills could be used to crush quite a bit more over the same time period. I could probably re-think my 1,500 kg. sampling plan. Maybe even enough gold will  settle out to pay for the thing.
