Nice to find this forum while doing research. I am in the Cowichan Valley and look forward to reading tales of adventure and exploration this summer coming.

I am also from Duncan, my only experience is a barge in Suriname and some time on a Amazon river or two.
Still have not even bought a pan.
Do you know if there is still a store with prospecting gear near Duncan? One keeps popping up when researching.

Would really appreciate a place or two to dig. I'll see if I can send you a pm with my contact info.

 <-wave-> and Welcome

When you buy a pan don't forget to Condition it.  Plastic Pans contain oils use hot water and a good dish detergent (Dawn) and scrub it with a scrubbie > do this a couple of times and rinse well with really hot water.
Then rub with sand. Do Not Use Steel Wool.

Good Luck on the Island  > Happy Trails.

What's the purpose of conditioning it? I just ordered a pan and haven't heard of this before.

Hi.Geo.Plastic pans are a oil product.Allplastic is.That being said you get oil residue and oil floats gold .Even the best like garrett pans give of some residue.Usually a good soaking in warm water and dish soap will take care of it.And a little hard use or scuffing.That being said if you buy the cheap made of shore pans 15.00 or less you may as well save them for fire starter,because they willalways leach out oil.Luck Mcbain.

Thanks for the good explanation mcbain. I cancelled my order for the cheap pan based off your comment. Would something like this https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000H82E2M/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3JVXPGY4Y8BM7&psc=1 be adequate?
