It could be a Quartz eye (it's a term I use myself). Basically, in metamorphic environments of high pressure and temperatures minerals can reach near melting temperatures. When this happens they become plastic and end up looking like melted plastic.  One thing for sure though it's one of three things - animal, vegetable or mineral.
