big boulders and black staining
« on: August 27, 2015, 03:44:48 PM »
hello all, I was back to my claim, I think we are on a placer from our last glacier. we walked the hole claim. we seen lots of good spots to check. but one spot has me wondering. we walked back what I though was a side brook and when we got in there we could see rocks the size of houses and cars. and from under the big rocks comes a very dark (black) staining all on the top of the ground. everything is stained black even the moss. is this a good spot to look? the story goes, that the gold has a thick layer of rust covering the gold. could this be the honey hole that I'm looking for?

HI MJ90!

I was wondering how you were doing there recently. I can't tell from your picture but it's possible that the black staining you see could be a manganese deposit (just a guess here, I'm no geologist!).
I have found black 'crust' and staining on some gold I have found in various places in Hants county. I had to use weak acid to clean up the gold. So anything is possible, but if you are seeing car-sized rocks
like that, you could find some interesting golds there. The phrase I have often heard is "Big rocks = Big Gold!" Here's hopin!

p.s. some pictures of this black staining you are seeing would help a lot for us to help you identify.

My two cents.  When you look, make sure it is not organic (eg. mold, rotted mushrooms, coal or burned).  If you think it is mineral, first guess is a ferromagnesian silicate.  However, in the mineral chart, colour is one of the worst/last things to use to determine what you are looking at.  Easier just to say "hey that is different" and then dig/pan a sample.

well guys the so called black staining was a bust. was not what I had imagine. took the 2BOX and the AT PRO over the area and did not have any hits at all. so we got out of there and found a new spot to sample. both 2BOX and AT PRO WENT CRAZZY at new area. found lots of quarts, black sands, garnets, and micro gold, in the rusty ground at the two foot level. hard digging with lots of rocks.

I see more than numerous Black stained River rock out here. I just assumed it was from the many ancient Coal Deposits being formed way back When? An uneducated, unscientific GUESS, but works for me? <-unsure_>

Those big boulders as big as a house are called eratics, remnants of the last glacial period.  Most times in NS they are round, made of granite.  Sometimes greywacke and slate but more often than not granite.  The black stuff underneath around them are likely organics that don't see much sun.

See some pictures of eratics here.
