Is it really greasy texture? Soft.
Maybe graphite. If there is coal around.
Like what is in your pencil.
Just a thought.

Well I have finally got to use a scale and attempt to determine SG. The number I'm coming up with is 2.389.

Dry weight was 6.21
Suspended in water it was 2.60

Seems like a pretty light piece of whatever the hell it is.

It couldn't be Anthracite, could it? Although I think the SG for coal is around 1.1 -1.3. Tons in the NSR But great find. <-yes_>

I had thought anthracite at one point also. it was however found in the south east coal field area of Saskatchewan. But it's so damn hard to scrape.

My vote is Hematite.  Streak grey, cannot scratch with a knife, grey streak, brittle, etc.  In fact, could be a variety called Speculariite.  AKA Grey Hematite and a few other names.

Shouldn't hematite streak red with an SG of over 5?
