Basalt ... Geodes ... in British Columbia?
« on: April 23, 2015, 10:11:15 PM »
Hi there!

My fiance is going nuts trying to figure out where to find geodes in BC?

We are in the lower mainland, somewhere close to start would be great, but we have no problem travelling around to find cool stuff.

Any type of interesting minerals of any sort would make her a happy girl! Just want to discover something a little more interesting then quartz agates and pyrite lol
Life Would Be Much Easier If I Had The Source Code!

If you are a facebook user you can search for groups or pages that have to do with rock hounding stuff, I am sure there is one with users around your area, then you can ask to go on a field trip with then or ask for good areas that they may share. I don't think its easy to find anything really nice just laying there, you most likely have to dig around or climb into areas. You might even find something on youtube if you look hard enough. Of course google local rockhounding clubs etc...

Check out the north summit of Pancake hill west of Merritt. We found lots of smashed geodes and freshly dug holes but didn't get any nice pieces ourselves.

Hi there, I'm new to the forum so be gentle ;)

Anyways, I'm also a sort of "new" rockhound in the lower mainland as well(I always looked for river agates with my Dad as a kid)! Well now some years later I've been doing quite a bit of research on different gems and where they can be found. Honestly, anything of interest and at this point I need a place to just point and shoot at, so to speak. From what I can gather most of the solid leader point quite a few hours north or inland...

Do you guys have any suggestions close or relatively close to Hope? I'm willing to do some pretty crazy hiking and whatever it takes at this point to find some interesting stuff!  <_miner_>

Oh, and I do have some info on Geodes, TimHortonsAddict.

As far as Geodes go, to my understanding they'll feel a bit lighter than a regular comparable stone, Being hollow and all. Though I'd imagine you might need to have a bit of experience to be able to sense that.
From what else I read, they'll sometimes have a cauliflower-ish shape, just oddly-shaped-  not like a proper round boulder.

So look for anything out of the ordinary I guess. Leave no stone unturned?

There's a few really good books to help you with your search as well. I just picked up a couple this last week. It tells you a few places to get them within a days drive of vancouver. Looks like they're mostly found outside the lower mainland.

If you're going to go out sometime... and want another newbie with you. Let me know. I'll tag along
