Okanagan rockhound....... Sorta
« on: December 10, 2014, 11:15:21 PM »
Hey guys thought I would try and start some chatter up. I'm in west kelowna and have recently become facinated with finding a geode but really any kind of cool rocks and gems. Have found a few small garnets and peridot while panning but would be interested in finding any agates or crystals or really just anything that might look cool polished up or tumbled. Have a 3 year old daughter that I want to involve so close to home would be nice and if nothing comes to mind I can always bring the fun back home to her. Anyways any help and advice would be hugely appreciated as I just got a tumbler and nothing all that great to tumble

I know in Kamloops there are Geodes and Herrling Island (Hope ) there are Agates.

Maybe check to see if there are any Rock & Gem Clubs in your area, I joined the Fraser Valley Club in Aldergrove. Most clubs have field trips.

Check the BC Lapidary society on face book they have field trips all over.

Good Luck!!!

Yes the Fraser has agates! We have found a few as big as your fist, but also lots of very clear specimens in the dime and quarter size. We don't take them very seriously though. Its just a way to kill time between fish. That is in the Chilliwack area though and I have never found (or looked for ) any at my claim in the Fraser Canyon.

correct me if the name is wrong, Whiteman creek going north up the westside of the lake, near you, has gem quality peridot.

I know the area you speak of thanks very much blu.  I found an agate and some Quartz crystals on boucherie. Unfortunately the crytals broke while trying to extract them. Have some cool piece of what should've been great specimens. Unfortunately I messed that one up.  I'll have to check out white man creek area asap

When I used drive through from Kamloops to Vernon I would see rockhounds poking around the cliffs on the east side of Monte Lake.  <_miner_>

Thanks that's very useful and I'll have to plan a trip soon
