Global Plate Tectonics
« on: December 12, 2008, 07:53:50 AM »
One of the most interesting aspects of geology to me is Global Plate Tectonics. Plate tectonics are responsible for many gold deposits. At spreading zones, where new crust is created, water penetrates deep into the fracutre zone, then re-emerges super heated and loaded with disolved minerals. These minerals come out of solution as the super heated water meets the ocean water, forming black clouds of minerals. In fact, the name of these hot water springs are black smokers.

As the crust is carried away from the spreading zone, eventually it gets subducted, meaning it goes underneath another plate, either an ocean plate or a contenintal plate. When this happens, some of the minerals that the black smokers brought up are carried down into the upper part of the mantle, and are mobalized by the heat. Some of the material is just scraped off and accumlates on the continental margin, forming what is called a melange. Mnay times there will be massive sulphide deposits in melange.

It is just a very interesting subject.
