So I emailed the MTO today in regards to the missing timer on the claim acusation page and they were like "Oh geez thats not right the timer should be there, we will get IT to fix it asap" LOL so glad I was able to help these idiots out.

Anyway I also asked them as to why maps are most of the mapp functions do not work on mobile phones and they gave me some BS about how their system is not designed to be used on mobile so I messaged them back again and told them they need to get up to the times here, people don't take a PC in to the bush with them but EVERYONE has a mobile phone in their pocket and it would be very helpful if their system was also compatible.

I encourage all of you who would like to see mobile support for the  MTO to send them a quick email with that request to [email protected] this way they know that it is not just me looking for this functionality.

You're welcome Matty - hopefully someone on the Island in or near Sooke will step up and offer to host you and your family for an afternoon : )

Hi Matty,

The easiest place to start would be the recreational gold panning reserves set aside by the government of BC - go here:

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/industry/mineral-exploration-mining/mineral-titles/reserves/recreational-panning-reserves

Here is a map of all panning reserves in BC (including Vancouver Island):
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/farming-natural-resources-and-industry/mineral-exploration-mining/documents/mineral-titles/reserves/recreational-panning-reserves/bc_recreational_panning_areahyperlinked_2015-12-04.pdf

Assuming you're on South Vancouver Island the closest one to you is the Goldstream River. If that's too far then it will be up to you to connect with claim owners on the South Island who would be willing to host you and your kid(s) on their claim for some panning.

Or - if you're ever over on the mainland I would recommend that you head to the Yale panning reserve (15 minutes north of Hope). It's a great place for kids and adults alike. Just dig anywhere with lots of cobbles and gravels in the first 6 inches and you'll get gold in most pans (and a bunch of garnets).

Thank you so much for this, this is fantastic information!

Just dig anywhere with lots of heavily compacted cobbles and gravels and you'll get a few pieces of flour gold in most pans (and likely a bunch of garnets plus black sand).

Thanks Mark.

Seems life had different plans for us, so finally accepted that I'd never get the chance to try prospecting. I tried to help out here when I could back then, but it's hard continuing to learn about something you know you'll never get to do. Only gold in my part of the world is in the morning sun.  ;)  From the Don Williams song, I'm Just A Country Boy,
"I've got silver in the stars[/size]And gold in the mornin' sun"

Hmmm.Just maybe.Just may be they have come into the 21st century and come up with some thing that might be fair for all.A lot of folks do not like Rubys idea of a bidding system but think about this.Aclaim becomes open or even a new one being granted,You actually go check it out and decide what it is worth to yourself and put in a bid accordingly.( their would have to be a time limit of course)Lets just for shits and giggles use 100 days.At the end of that time Mto would award it to the highest bidder if he still wanted it.If not it goes back down the line until only aflipper would pick it up.Now this is all public knowledge avaiable to any buyer.I Think something like this would wipe out flippers and cheats altogether. After all they are just selling real estate never having set foot on the ground.Just my opinion each to his own.Luck Mcbain.
