Title: Help I bought a metal detector and It's smarter than me
Post by: Arik on May 13, 2012, 09:16:01 PM
Hey all,

I have recently purchased a AT Gold metal detector.... I'm a newb and this thing is way advanced for me the book says this and that but, I was wondering if anyone out there has and is currently using one of these bad boys for searching for the "colour" and would be able to give a laymans version about the use....

Thanks Y'all

Good luck with your new machine.  Sorry, there is no short cut on learning how to use the machine.  If you don't know how to make it work and learn what different targets sound like you going to be frustrated.  Read the instructions, read some AT forums, and practice with various sizes of lead shot at various depths.  The AT is a VLF detector and is good for small gold nuggets IF properly ground balanced and IF you learn to recognize what your machine is telling you. If your gold will pass thru a number 8 classifier you won't see it with the detector, so don't expect to find small to fine gold.  And don't expect to see gold deeper than about 6 ".  Your experimenting with lead shot will give you a good idea of what to expect.

Metal detecting is probably the hardest and most frustrating way to prospect.

It will detect any 'conductive' materials. Gold is a better conductor then black sands, so it will sing a different tone for the gold vs. the black sands.

Easy answer 'both.'

Did you ever buy your metal detector? Have you swung it much if so? Have you found anything?

Here is a suggestion technique you can try:

Lay different metal pieces ; e.g Gold, Copper, Silver ...etc on a piece of wood , spacing each from the other in a suitable distance , then practice hearing the different tones your machine gives you , try this for a suitable till you're comfortable with different sounds from the MD. Then you can go on to play with the settings , one set at a time , not so long you will find yourself in the right mind-track to find the yellow stuff  ;)

This is just a start, it's a long way I 'm afraid but very rewarding   <-yes_> <-good_>

Hey guys,

I haven't had a chance to get out. Life seems to get in the way sometimes. Rest assured though when I do get out i will report back. @will thanks sir for the information. I have checked it and I'm currently re reading the manual. Lol. Soon I'll be picking gold ring out of the beach. Or working on a wall in a cave somewheres.
