There have been several posts on this subject.  Read back through the titles in this detector section and you should find them. My guessed bet is the Fisher Goldbug2 for all round small gold detecting, but if you're looking for really small stuff in ore then check out the Falcon for me.  A lot of folks also swear by the MineLab 5000 for all nugget sizes and depths (has variable settings), but its not the most affordable detector out there.
Its a tough choice nothing easy about it.  You have to look at degree of difficulty in learning how to use it, what exactly you're trying to find with it, and how much you're willing to pay.  Good luck and let us know what you buy and how it works for you!

I use a Minelab SDC2300 here in Australia and they are the benchmark for finding small gold, nuggets down to .02 or less grams. Sometimes it can be mind blowing how small the gold can be. Remember there is more small gold than big and it all weighs!!

You only gave two clues - small gold and GA.  First off, there is no "best detector", but lots of opinions.  My two cents is get the Minelab SDC if you can afford it.  However, for GA, a VLF will probably work fine in most spots, so I would look at the Fisher Gold Bug II and Whites GMT.  There are lots of other options out there too.
