i built my own highbanker last spring out of wood and a little bit of expanded metal and a couple of bolts, i tried to wear it out this summer, but i built the d87n thing to well, so now i'm looking to build a trommel this winter, but i think i'm gonna have to use metal for that, has anybody ever seen a trommel built out of wood?

Actually the different materials, shapes and styles used over the years to act as riffles would amaze you, I have seen riffles made from tree limbs, don't remember if they were spruce or cedar or what, now they weren't any good at catching fines bit they did work to a degree and the guy was happy looking for nuggets.

During the old days of the Cariboo Gold rush the miners didn't have access to metals or cut lumber to begin with, so they used what they had at hand, their brains and simple tools, the Romans used carefully collected cobbles of a even size to line their sluice with there by making it easier to identify the concentrates, the old timers sometimes used to split planks to make a rough sluice and then with a brace and bit (light weight and easy enough to pack into the back country) drill holes into the bottom of the sluice to collect the heavies, in the big hydraulic sluices used in the Cariboo 4-6-8 ft wide and 100s of feet long they used to cut blocks of wood, still round and stand them on end to act as riffles, with the gold and concentrates fillling in the gaps between the blocks, now not very efficient but it did work to a degree, one of the reasons that working old tailing piles can be so lucrative and these riffle types could take a beating, ya gotta remember that when hydralicing they weren't classifying the material before running it through the riffles, the riffles themselves acted as the classifier in a lot of cases..Greywolf

I'm not familiar with the project you're looking for but making recessed (drop) riffles in wood or plastic is done using a router. I've heard that people are having the best success using a 'dovetail' bit which creates a recess with inward sloping edges. The old timers used routing planes and cut in groves and then pounded in thin copper or brass strips leaving one side of the strip protruding above the top of the groove by about an eighth of an inch. I think this created a small vortex in the recess.

Which plan or plans is it that has the problem ?   Send me the link via personal email (not PM but regular email to larry at gpex.ca) and I will forward it on to Dave - he's the mastermind behind all this programming stuff, not I.   I wonder if it could be a spin-off from previous hacking which took out photos and pdf files. ????????  We'll try to get to the bottom of it.

Thanks for the notification

As previously noted, when the lights went out in Georgia it literally fried the harddrive which held all the pdf and image data, and Dave has been painstakingly trying to recover the data, bit by little bit.  A most tedious, unforgiving and timely job.  Though not a fault or short-coming on our part, we do, however, apologize for the delay.

For those who joined to attain the two-post door-opener so as to peak around in the DIY closet, do feel free to engage as a fully active member and hopefully contribute to our ever-growing community and information database. For I’m sure you will find roaming around indoors has much more to offer than peering in from the outside.  In the interim, while Dave is so tediously laboring forward (as his time permits) in performing the impossible, as a member you are also encouraged to make posts, share experiences, shoot the breeze and generally participate, which includes uploading many more DIY plans, so as to enhance our already storehouse of excellent information relative to miners and prospectors all across the globe. The object is to share and share alike.  That’s why we bring this site to you and why each and every member plays such an integral role in building the Forum to the dynasty it enjoys today.  :)

I,m new to prospecting or mining of any kind. I live in central california (near Sac.) and have access to several areas that may be productive. I am interested in small scale stuff that can still be done in California (no dredging) and have some property to set up some final extraction equipment. I will have to do this all on the cheap but I am very well versed in fabrication and would like any information on DIY equipment. I plan to set aside one or two days a week to attempt to collect some gold.  <-thinking->

Not up to par with the regs in Cali. Your equipment choice would depend on how much material you are wanting to process. You can start as small as a hand sluice then a High Banker or go as far as building a trammel <sp>. There are a few good sites out there with plans for making gold prospecting equipment some are free and some have a small price. I hope this helps.

Have read about building your own gold vacuum and purchased a "Bucket Vac" from lowe's. Proceeded to removed the AC motor assembly modify the intake manifold to accept a "Weed-Eater" mini blower unit. However, I'm having trouble matching the intake manifold of the blower to the top of the drum with out any air leaks. I know that it takes ingenuity & forthought, but I'm sort of stumped at the issue. Anyone have any ideas?

I gotta ask.... why the two post requirement before access to the downloads?  Most of these posts exchange no useful information..... just short comments to fill the "two post" square.

In any case, here is what I'm interested in and hope to find in the downloads.  I have a leaf blower I got cheap as a display model from Home depot.  It has an unusual air intake design so I am hoping to view examples of how others have built their home made gold vacs and get some ideas that might help me solve my problem.  This probably be my primary project this winter.

One of the DIY prospecting projects that I have been using these last two summers is a home made highbanker from Honcoop plans.  The riffle trays I made of aluminum angle and aluminum carpet edge molding for the upper box.  The riffle tray in the bottom box has aluminum rails and a piece of diamond pattern steel.  The flat components of the riffle trays were pop-rivited.   The highbanker has two spray bars with individual valves to control the flow of water in each sluice.  The header box has a mount to place a full 5 gallon bucket of material and a garden hose tapped off the pvc water manifold  to spray the material out of the bucket into the header box.  I use a small Honda general purpose "15" series pump that is smaller than what Don Honcoop recommends, but puts out more water volume than needed and a lot lighter to carry.  I used aluminum, adjustable crutches for the legs which allows easy adjustments in one inch increments to adjust each leg individually and accommodate uneven terrain while maintaining an optimum slope for optimum riffle operation.

I also bought plans for Hart's GoldPype and hope to have it ready for next spring.

I am a big supporter of home made equipment.  They work great and cost a lot less than store bought gear.

Now, I'm looking forward to access to the DIY downloads on this site....   <-yahoo_>

So far this is the best site for DIY projects. I'm retired U.S. Army and our government sure is cheap when it comes to any kind of retirement pay. So being a newbie I've got to watch my money and kind of do things on the cheap for now. Kudos to our Canadian cousins!

Has anyone thought of using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for equipment and water flow design. I'm just starting to teach myself how the software works and it looks like it could be a useful tool in designing precious metal recovery. {cool^sign}

I like the Garrett pan its 14 inches and real handy. You will need you a snuffer bottle as well. If your looking for a good sluice to back pack with I would look at some of the new drop riffle sluices from what I have read on them there light weight and do real well catching small gold.

This is the best and easiest to build that I have found.
The material is from a discarded satellite dish, aluminum diamond  mesh about 2 mm long dimension. Build it to fit within your larger pan, it takes up hardly any space. The aluminum mesh material is strong enough to be self supporting and the cut edges are not sharp or too scratchy.
Screen is in top pan.

Making a new one. still un-trimmed

Make six cuts with a tinsnip, bend up the outer part and hold the shape with clamps or clothespins, and then squirt some silcone caulk into the overlapping edges, let dry and trim to fit. The hardest part is finding the right material.

Have always wanted to do this.  I am curious if most people find it cost effective to build their equipment vs buying when you first start out.  It seems like one could invest more in building and get frustrated then possibly getting a basic sluice box and getting some gold and really getting excited?

I am new to the Canadian Gold Prospecting Forum. I am looking for plans to build a trommel, perhaps with a reverse helix barrel. Am an Arizona raised "Desert Rat", having retired for the third time and returned to the desert. Bored to death and need some "outdoor time", so have been metla detecting and some limited panning (littttttle water sources here, except very seasonal). Seems you forum is both extensive and very diversified. Thanks for allowing me in

Regarding powering a trommel;

Has anyone tried a water driven motor? I was considering using the flow from the pump in the water siurce (river), to turn the trommel. Just not sure where to find a water driven motor, and what pressure, GPM would be required. Since the pump is already requireed why not swhare some fo itws flow with the trommel as a driver? Thoughts or suggestions???

Hi all was reading through posts and read someone looking for a way to break up large amounts of clay.
I have been experimentingg with a building product called papercrete and the mixer we built ,called a tow mixer would work well for this
you can find the designes for it on ytube just type in papercrete tow mixer.
Can be made to work in a stationary position too

if you built the trommel  on a smooth bearing and had the viens at the tail end sticking into a free flowing river you could get it spinning

I used a 3 inch funnel. I then cut off the small end so that the whole thing is about 3 inches high. Then I used silicone to glue it to the pan. Don't have any gold but lead shot stays in the pan, so I assume gold will too.
I have built a lot of stuff from the diy projects, but hav not been able to get out yet. Hope to cure that soon.

Good day everyone,

I am building my own sluice box and am basically using the traditional sluice trough, 10" X 48", with a hopper at the top for classifying.   I have read all the information and watched pretty much all of the content on the Gold Gog site and after a lot of research on the internet I have convinced myself to try the matting that Doc is recommending and distributing.

My question is this.   Have any of you used any of the Gold Hog matting and if so, in what configuration? ie: UL, Scrubber and Razoback.   I would be interested in knowing if any of you, particularily in the north west US and British Columbia,  have tried different configurations and achieved different results with the same dig area.

The test results on the Gold Hog site seem pretty conclusive so any data to back up their testing would be helpful.  I will still try out their matting but would like to know if anyone else has had success with it.

Thank you,
Marshall.

The ring gear from a parted out Lycoming aero engine and starter would work well. You know how slow a prop turns when a plane is starting, probably close to the speed you need. Ring gears come in 149 and 122 tooth versions. Cal

I am brand new to this site so excuse my Green-ness. I am building a replica Bazooka drop trap sluice that is slightly larger than the prospector model. I was wondering if I could get some thoughts on adding small ribs running parralel to the sluice in a (V) pattern. I am making my DT out of ABS that I salvaged from the drip pans we use on the Jets I work on. I was planning on plastic welding 10 (5 left, 5 right in a V) of the ribs that would be .5cm high, .5cm wide, and run about 10cm to pre stratify/classify the material. the back end of the ribs would be a gradual rise to .5cm.

For my second post, I'll make it a little longer.
I have made some DIY gold prospecting equipment.  Mostly sluices and high bankers.  Now I am designing my own simple, wooden rocker box.

I'm not really in a known gold location but I still keep looking.  You never know unless you look.

Hi (again)

And, this is my second post...........!  In the past year I have been getting back into G-rec 'Specting. I am retired now but in my youth I did a lt of rock hounding and G panning.  Since then I had a satisfying 40 yr career contracting, innovating and commercializing new urethane products and building systems (much of it in the far north and internationally).  I am excited to be apart a this site and becoming an active participant.

I've never prospected in Indiana but I'm assuming it has "fine gold" similar to Ohio.  I'd suggest looking at and then building a miller table.  I'm still working on getting one together (or actually gathering up parts to build one) but from the videos and information I have found it looks like about the cheapest and easiest piece of clean-up equipment you could build and then actually use to salvage all the real tiny specks of gold from your concentrates.  Getting the water flow and angle right looks like the most important part as well as classifying your material but once you figure it out I'm sure it will be well worth the time to build.  One benefit to this piece of equipment is you can use it during these long winters when you can't make it out to hunt for the gold.  The kitchen table, basement, or garage should work for indoor clean-ups.

Make sure you save up your concentrates (especially the black sands) when you do go out prospecting to keep yourself busy when the cabin fever and gold fever gets too bad in the off season.

I just joined the forum. I do a lot of DIY projects, mostly for film production equipment. I grew up on a mining claim in California, and have recently re-filed the claim for myself. I'm mostly interested in ultra fine gold concentration techniques, as this site originally had three tunnel claims that produced millions in the 1840's and 50's. I'd like to reprocess some of the extensive tailings, as a hobby.

These plans came from  a reprint of a 1934 Information Circular from the US Bureau of Mines. I tried uploading the complete document but it wouldn't upload, I suspect  the document is tool large for the site (35 M).  I ended up copying the plans into a MSWord document and I've attached these instead.  The information circular has additional plans for other equipment that could be useful on placer claims. Al though it has some dry statistical sections it does have give examples of existing placer operations and how they solved various operational problems - boulders, water supply, hoisting from pits etc.  A lot the information is just as applicable today as it was 80 years ago, it's a good read.  You can get a copy at www. dggs.alaska.gov/pubs/series/usbm/information-circular
it's listed as IC6786

Pumping water and be a major problem especially if you are in remote locations. Hydraulic rams require no pumps or power to move water uphill, just some piping and a little fabrication.  Hope you find this an interesting solution.

Which file is it you're trying to access? Look for the Post # next to the dats and time that the post was made.

The first file I see is called ScreenShotMiningPlans.jpg and clicking on it opens up a window asking if I want to view the image or save it to file. Could it be that when you click, that it's just automatically opening the image in another tab or another window? Or could it be downloading it automatically?

ho , no . what if you cant think of anything to say or ask ? hope this is two ! lol <_miner_> BUT if you all can hang on , I just might think of one or the other .

OK , am an 1/8 th in a 160 acre claim in the Boise Basin .  has been hydroliced  (sp) lol but not to bad . nice thing in a few places they made bed rock .  now that can be fun . just dig down a few inches and wa la color .  mostly small but chunky and rough .  manly decomposed granite . laced with some quarts  stringers .  it's kinda hard to not find color on this spot . just small . never had a chance to move a whole lot of dirt .  so am hopping that once we get set up to move a half doz. yards or so . it will pick up .  one of the guys has picked two skid steers and a small excavator . so , we just might find enought to have a vacation in Ohyhee . no not all them islands . just Silver City . but you just never know .

here is , to you all having a super weekend ! color all over . just don't lick your lips !  is this to much for a second post ? can take it back .

Hi.Horseshoes.Go with a good high banker.A trommel is nice but still requires a sluice, motors and pumps.O.K. for a big op. but if you are the op a highbanker is all you need. And do not buy anything without getting some input on what you plan to buy or build. You have every oppurtunity to work with my eqipment before you go out and make a wrong move.I learned the hard way and it cost a lot of money.I hate to see others make the same mistakes I did.You can learn alot by just paying a visit.Luck Mcbain.
