Title: detecting black sands
Post by: rock on October 11, 2013, 10:34:31 AM
I have an AT GOLD detector. Was out on the Red Deer river last week looking for any sign of pay streaks. With the detector set on ALL METAL, no discrimination, full sensitivity and 0 on the balance window, I was getting signals on the earphones but no readings on the LED scale. These occurred mainly behind rocks and obstructions. Are these signals an indication of iron laden black sands? THX.

1st question - what did you find out when you dug out and panned these spots?

I found small amount of black sand, with micron gold. looked like glitter. would the gold drop out directly behind the rock or trail down away?

If it is gold and you are panning correctly the gold should be stubborn and isolate itself above and away from the black sand or perhaps be visible in the upper edge of the black sand.  When you say "glitter" gold will always look like gold whether it is shaded or in full light.  Pyrites or other shiny minerals may appear as "golden glitter" in the light but lose that appearance when shaded.  Just block the light and see what happens.  I hope your's stays golden!

Did you try it with "iron audio' on? With that on, it should 'grunt' over the black sands......

Just get a magnet on a stick sort of deal... you will tell if there are black sands in quick order ;)
