Title: I just want to pan / Sluice / Dredge... Where do I go..
Post by: Pat-Pan on September 19, 2013, 02:24:03 PM
I recently called my local mining association to inform myself on Prospecting in Quebec, and I was advised that I was not allowed to pan anywhere in Quebec and that it against the law. They advised me that with a Prospecting license I was only allowed to explore the land without digging / Sluicing / or even Panning.

I have never been out to prospect or panning, however really would like to do so. Does anyone have any advice for me on where I could go, to go camping for a a month where I could panning and not brake the law, I want to start this as my new hobby, however there's many blocks for me here in Montreal Quebec.

You are allowed to pan in Quebec you must have the proper equipment to be legal though. You must be sure to wear a turban, hijab, or crucifix and if anyone asks you what you are doing, RUN!  [email protected]*

Just kidding though. Sounds a little fishy though that you cant prospect without digging???

Ask another source, or contact the mineral resources ministry directly and ask them.

Bonne chance

Check out Maine for relatively close locations. http://www.maine.gov/doc/lupc/forms/applications/ShorelandAlt_Recreational%20Gold%20Prospect_ver2001.pdf http://www.maine.gov/doc/lupc/forms/applications/ShorelandAlt_Recreational%20Gold%20Prospect_ver2001.pdf.  Wintertime - Arizona and California (some "Snowbirds" on this forum do this).  Summertime - Western US,  Western Canada and Alaska. All may have certain limitations and/or local regulations.  Google is your friend!  Check out GPAA, Oregon Gold Hunters, etc. Good luck and safe travel!
PS:  I love your sarcasm mcbain.

Of course you can pan in Quebec.  In fact, here is an example of a place that you can camp and pan: LA VALLÉE HEUREUSE DU MONT ÉLAN.  They will even rent you the equipment.  I have not been to this place, so it is not a recommendation.  I understand they get fine gold from the creek.

Dont get your hopes up for a start. Just go out and enjoy yourself and learn how to shake out a pan. The gold will come in time, but yes be excited! [<-panning->] {cool^sign}

find yourself a nice secluded spot in the woods and do it anyway ;) unless your going out there with heavy machinery,tearing up mad ground etc. what are the chances of getting caught. what are the odds that in the chance someone discovers you, they even know its illegal, let alone call the police on you..

I'm renting a cottage out by Big hollow river near East Angus Quebec, and it is permitted to pan and dig up to 3 feet, however I would need to fix anything I move to not disturb any habitation or dangers to other hikers or prospectors.

I assume that it is legal as I will be on privet land, and they also rent gold pans at the front office on the land, and also mention on their web-site that you can do prospecting.

Allowed or not,, im going, not to try to hit the mother load, but to have the pleasure of learning to pan and sluice. I will also be looking for some gem's, but my main search will be for the gold....
